Every year about this time I am reminded of how important it is to reflect on what God has done and how difficult it is to hang on to those memories.

God actually spends a lot of time in the Bible reminding us to remember…probably because we are so prone to forgetting. What do you use to remember? Today we tend to use Post-it notes, To-Do-lists, email, text reminders, etc. Do you remember the WWJD craze that happened several years ago? That was a catchy little gimmick meant to help us remember to ask what Jesus would do in the situations we find ourselves in…too bad it became more of a an accessory than a reminder. Oh well, you get the point right?

Just prior to the children of Israel entering the Promised Land, Moses tells them…

“These commandments I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands (I wonder if that is where the “tying the string on the finger to remember” thing came from?), bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your homes and on your gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)

A little later in the story, after all of God’s children make it across the Jordan River into the Promised Land, the Lord told Joshua to choose twelve men from among the people to pick up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests stood. They then were told to make a pile out of the stones. “In the future, when your children ask you, ‘what do these stones mean?’ Tell them that these stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.” (Joshua 4:6-7)

If the children of Israel needed to tie reminders to their hands, strap them to their foreheads, paint them on their houses and gates and pile up stones to remember the truths about God, what makes us think that we can get by with an occasional thought, a nice sermon, a drive by prayer or a three minute devotional in the morning? In this crazy, broken, noisy, busy, entertainment driven, over worked and digitally connected world we live in, we desperately need to take time to remember.

This is the time of the year when, for obvious reasons, we reflect on the more important things in our lives like family, relationships and all of the blessings that we have been given. I continue to be blown away at the work that God is doing in me and through me with True Pursuit. When I stop in the midst of all of the craziness of life and reflect, I see the faces (memorials if you will) of men whose hearts are being restored into what God intends for His Beloved children. I see marriages that have been put back together, relationships that are mended, careers that have been recovered and addictions that are being overcome by the restorative power of Jesus Christ.

So, in all of the hustle and bustle of Christmas and New Years…take time to reflect on all that Jesus has done and with faith, hope and joy cling to all that He promises. Remember!
