HAWKS
As a young boy growing up in the country, I would stare at the Red-Tailed Hawks that would soar over our house. I loved the way they would ride the thermals, and the way they would screech as they scanned the field next to our house for a meal. I still get excited when I see a hawk soaring or sitting on a fence post along the side of the highway. One of my buddies always marvels when we are driving, and I say, “there’s a hawk!” I have an eye for them wherever I am.
I have always been fascinated with Hawks.
Over the past several years I have come to believe that Hawks are God’s way of reminding me that He is near. Whenever I see a hawk I immediately say, “thank you Abba” and I sense His presence in that moment. It is almost like Abba is giving me a kiss on the cheek and telling me that He loves me.
In 2003 while at a Wild at Heart Boot Camp in the mountains of CO, I asked Abba if He had a name for me. I believe that He has a special name for each one of His Beloved children. A name that is uniquely ours, that reveals our glory, and His love for each of us. It was the last time of reflection on the weekend, and I had been asking Him for a name since I had gotten there. I had my journal open and pen in hand, hoping that I would hear something. Then I heard it; “you are Hawkeye, and you will be the rescuer of men’s hearts.” I was shocked, but I wrote it down in my journal. It would be a year before I told another person what I had heard, because I don’t think I believed it myself. Can you see the beauty in Abba giving me the name Hawkeye? It makes so much sense considering my love for Hawks.

Is it Hawks, Eagles, a Whitetail Deer? Is it a sea-scape, or the mountains? Is it a lake, river, waterfalls? A farmer’s field, the smell of a pine forest, or wildflowers? Is it an old barn, or a sunrise or sunset?
Pay attention, because these are the ways that Abba often stirs our hearts and gets our attention.
