The mission of True Pursuit is to rescue the hearts of men from their personal prison of regrets, self-doubt and hatred, and shame, and into a life of freedom that comes from embracing and living out of their true identity. We believe the only way to do this is to face the wounds and shame of our stories and invite God to heal and transform these places.
It was out of my own journey through this process that True Pursuit was born. Through the ministry of Ransomed Heart, I discovered why I was such an angry man, and why I hated myself, and why I always felt like a huge disappointment to God and to others. In 2003, I began the process of discovering my wounds, and realizing the effect that they had had on me, my wife and children, and in my other relationships. Over the next couple of years, I went to work on my own heart and received significant healing. My wife and children began to see and experience me in new ways.
One of the reoccurring wounds in my story was that of not being rescued. I didn’t know all of those years that what I really wanted, and needed, was to be rescued. In 2003 while sitting on a boulder in the Rocky Mountains, I heard the voice of God (maybe for the first time in my life) saying, “Pete the reason you want to rescue men, is because you were never rescued. I am calling you to be the rescuer of men’s hearts.” This was so unnerving that I didn’t mention that moment to anyone for over a year.
In 2005, I gathered a handful of men in my living room and asked them if they would join me in this mission of rescuing the hearts of men. They all said yes, and within 8 months I left my job with Young Life and started True Pursuit. For the last 12 years we have been creating safe environments for men to be honest about their brokenness so they too can begin the journey of healing and restoration.
While our mission and message has not changed that much over the past 12 years, our impact has grown substantially. We have had hundreds of men attend our weekends and other events, and I continue to meet with men who are in crisis on a regular basis. Just this year True Pursuit is releasing a resource dashboard on our website and launching what we believe is our most significant work so far: an intensive discipleship program that is designed to specially train a man to powerfully influence the world around them for the Kingdom of God.
